PREMIUM SPLICING The simplest way to increase the performance of your running rigging is to taper your halyards and sheets. This nip/tuck procedure has become the standard on race boats to remove weight and bulk from important places and to increase the line’s performance running through blocks while leaving cover where a line is handled, clutched or cleated. The following are simple guides to the most common ways. Stripped Cover Custom Running Rigging Guide: 2 WAYS TO TAPER To meet the demands of performance sailors, lines like Crystalyne, V100, Admiral Dyneema, DSK 75 Race, Maxibraid Plus, Commander Dyneema and Endura Braid are manufactured with tightly woven, coated cores so covers can be readily stripped. The simplest way to save weight aloft is to strip the cover off your halyard. We strip the cover from the head of the sail to the point just before it's handled to be jumped in a hoist. From that point down, we leave the cover so the halyard can be handled and cleated. The same stripping can be done for sheets to save weight at the clews, especially on spinnakers. On control lines, stripping can reduce roller friction in blocks and make loaded multipurchases a lot easier to adjust. Please specify your length requirements. RIGSTRIP $22.00, plus materials Cover Splice on 12 Strand We add a durable cover like Yale's cover-only or MGP Nomex, MGP Technora, MGP Aramid, ARC or DCS to high-strength, low-stretch AmSteel Blue, AS-90, Dynex Dux 75 or Vectrus 12 so they can be used as halyards, runners, sheets or control lines or as extra protection on double braids. Where the line is cleated, clutched, winched and handled, the cover protects the core from abrasion. The result is minimum weight aloft and in the boat. You can even choose to cover only the "working area" leaving the bitter end uncovered so there's less tail to deal with on halyards when the sail's hoisted (also great for eventual “end-for-ending”). Or have only the “working area” covered on continuous control lines. Please specify your length requirements. RIGCOVER12S $28.00 -$38.00, plus materials 1 . Stripped Cover Original Core 2. The easiest way to do this is to add additional cover or core to increase the diameter. Designed to only cover the area where the clutch is secured. CHAFE SLEEVE Protect the portion of your line going through the sheave box. This causes constant wear on your halyards, making them not last as long. Add longevity and substantially increase the working life of your life with a chafe sleeve. Clutch Bulk Splice High tech lines such as Crystalyne, V100, Maxibraid Plus and Endura Braid are so strong they often enable you to downsize to a diameter too small for your clutches to hold. By adding a short section of double cover or inserting a short section of small 3/16” Amsteel Blue line into the core we increase the line's outside diameter where it’s clutched. RIGBULK1 Cover $20.00 RIGBULK2 Core Insert $20.00 plus materials Where Halyard Exits Sheave Box in This Area Stripped Cover Chafe Sleeve The greatest wear point on a stripped halyard is typically the first 2 or 3 feet, closest to the shackle. This part of the line is constantly wearing in the sheave box. To combat this problem, we have started adding a DCS Dyneema chafe sleeve to stripped halayrds. This adds substantially to the working life of a halyard. Just ask and we’ll add it on.
